Your Queries Answered: Understanding Verifiable Credentials

Verifiable Credentials are digital, cryptographically secure, and privacy-preserving documents that represent an individual’s identity attributes, qualifications, or achievements. They are issued by trusted authorities, such as governments, educational institutions, or employers, and are stored in a digital wallet controlled by the individual.

Verifiable Credentials work by leveraging blockchain technology and decentralised identifiers (DIDs) to create tamper-evident, verifiable, and interoperable credentials. When an individual presents a credential to a verifier, such as a business or service provider, the verifier can cryptographically validate the authenticity and integrity of the credential without the need to contact the issuer directly. This enables secure, efficient, and privacy-preserving identity verification, reducing the risk of fraud and data breaches while empowering individuals with control over their personal information.

That’s why they’re the foundation of self-sovereign identity solutions, enabling a more secure, transparent, and user-centric approach to identity management in the digital age.

Verifiable Credentials are designed with strong cryptographic techniques, ensuring that the credentials are tamper-proof and can be securely shared. They are as secure as the latest technology in encryption and digital security allows.

The technology behind Verifiable Credentials is powered by decentralised identifiers (DIDs) and blockchain for secure, immutable record-keeping. This ensures that credentials are verifiable and cannot be altered or forged.

Due to the nature of how it’s designed, you’d need to compromise the issuer, verifier, and holder to obtain data. 

Verifiable Credentials are regulated and governed by standards established by organisations like the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Additionally, they adhere to national laws and policies related to digital identity and data protection. Governing bodies also regulate common credential types, such as ID and Proof of Address, to ensure they are issued and shared only by trusted sources.

Verifiable Credentials Verifiable Credentials are designed to comply with privacy laws such as GDPR and POPIA. They empower individuals to manage their personal data, incorporating consent mechanisms and adhering to the principle of data minimisation. Importantly, no personally identifiable information is stored on the blockchain, ensuring that users maintain control over their ‘right to be forgotten.’

At POSshoppers can utilise their Verifiable Credentials through a mobile app, USSD, API or any other wallet mechanism. QR codes, biometric data, or other touch points available to a business, can be scanned or transmitted to confirm identity or validate transactions with new parties while known clients can be requested to share credentials without any intervention.

This process connects customers to businesses, enabling ongoing interactions. Consequently, businesses can send ‘proof requests’ for necessary verifications, adapting from simple identity confirmations to more sophisticated processes as needed. 

Although smartphones are the predominant tool for using Verifiable Credentials because of their ability to run required apps and provide secure storage, there are alternatives for non-smartphone users. These include SMS-based verification and smart cards. APIs supporting Verifiable Credentials are designed to be lightweight and versatile, allowing credentials to be utilised across various channels, including apps, kiosks, and even USSD. This flexibility ensures that users can transact easily and efficiently, both online and in person.  

Wallets are tied to a single identity. One identity could have many wallets, but a single wallet cannot house multiple identities. On a desktop or laptop, a user could sign in and out whenever needed and their wallet follows them around. However, on a mobile device this would be cumbersome.

Secure Citizen actively maintains the validity and integrity of Verifiable Credentials through several key steps. The organisation consistently updates its security protocols and conducts thorough verification of issuer authority. Additionally, it closely monitors the revocation status of Verifiable Credentials.

The responsibility for maintaining credential validity rests with the issuers, who must adhere to rigorous governance frameworks for credential management. For example, if a store account is closed, the issuer initiates a revocation to nullify the credential.

When a verifier subsequently requests information from this credential and queries the Verifiable Data Registry (VDR), they will be informed that the credential has been revoked.

If a digital wallet is lost or stolen, Secure Citizen implements several protective measures to safeguard the user’s credentials. These include remote wallet lock, data encryption, biometric authentication, and recovery mechanisms. Initially, a custodial model is used, where the user owns and controls their wallet, but it is hosted on their behalf.

This model provides an added layer of security and ease of use. For users familiar with blockchain ecosystems and the responsibilities of self-hosting, the option to self-host their wallet will be made available, offering greater control and autonomy over their digital credentials.

Thin file’ individuals, who have limited digital or financial records, are accommodated through alternative verification methods. These include community vouching, biometrics, and the use of physical documents to establish Verifiable Credentials (VCs).

By accumulating attestations over time, along with verifiable receipts and transactional information, these individuals can build a profile that enables the generation of alternative credit scores and other indicators.

This approach is pivotal in integrating the unbanked or economically excluded into the broader economy, allowing them to become active economic participants.

Verifiable Credentials offer enhanced security and privacy, reducing the risk of fraud and identity theft. They provide a more efficient means of managing and verifying credentials, streamlining processes across various platforms without compromising the integrity of the data.

Minimal tech skills are needed to use Verifiable Credentials (VCs), thanks to user-friendly interfaces. The infrastructure requirements are low, as VCs seamlessly integrate with existing systems via simple APIs and digital interfaces. This interoperability allows for easy adoption across various sectors, making VCs accessible to a broad range of users and businesses. 

Implementation and maintenance costs for Verifiable Credentials are generally lower compared to traditional systems due to the reduced need for physical documentation and the efficiency of digital processes. Ongoing costs are associated with system updates and security measures to maintain the integrity and security of the credentials. 

The adoption rate of Verifiable Credentials is growing, as more businesses and institutions recognise their benefits in terms of security, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Increasing awareness and understanding of Verifiable Credentials continue to drive their uptake across multiple sectors.
